Amplifiear enhances iPad audio using old-school gramophone tech

Nonlinear Studios will be enjoying its second successful Kickstarter since the small Brooklyn, NY-based company first pitched its E Ink watch to the masses. Its next big thing is, simply put, a gramophone for your iPad 2 or 3rd generation iPad called the Amplifiear.

It’s simple geometry when you really think about it; your iPad’s speakers are in the back, facing away from the listener. This system results in customers paying for external audio devices, or the more miserly among us just blow out our iPad speakers by turning the volume up. The Amplifiear works by redirecting sound like an old-school gramophone.

The video above illustrates the stark difference between listening without, and then with this product. The best part about it for consumers is it requires no Bluetooth hookup, and no extra batteries or charging–it’s a piece of rounded ABS plastic.

The product may have 18 more days to go, but it has already received 100% funding and then some (over $16,000 for a $10,000 goal). Those looking to pick up one by supporting the Kickstarter no longer have the cheapest $15 option available to them, but for $20 you can still get an Amplifiear in your choice of any color (red, green, blue, white, or black).

Retailers looking to get a jump-start on what already looks like a hot item have an option to donate anywhere from $100 to $5,500 or more, and receive bulk sets of the Amplifiear. These sets come in the form of small “retail starter kits” (10 Amplifiears in one color) to full-blown “distributor packs” (60 cartons with each color).
