Leaked Lost Planet 3 trailer harks back to first game

There was quite a contrast between the first two games in the Lost Planet series developed by Capcom. The original Lost Planet and subsequent Extreme Conditions enhanced version were set in a snow and ice environment filled with mechs, bugs, and giant bosses. It was a great single-player experience. The second game was instead optimized for four-player co-op and left the snowy landscape behind early on in the gameplay, replacing it with jungles and rundown cityscapes.

Review scores for the second game were typically lower than the first, with Metacritic showing average scores of 79 and 68 respectively for the Xbox versions. Capcom has clearly realized we want more of the first and less of the second game, and a leaked trailer for Lost Planet 3 shows that’s exactly what we can expect to get.

Although there’s no gameplay on display in the trailer, the focus is all on a cold environment once again. We also see the central character using a mech, and two different types of bugs are on display. So far so good.

One big difference this time, however, is the developer. Capcom is not handling development itself like it did for the first two titles. Instead, Spark Unlimited has been entrusted with the IP. Spark has in the past brought us Turning Point: Fall of Liberty and Legendary, bot of which did not garner high review scores. The studio is also thought to be working on Star Wars: Battlefront 3.

With the trailer now leaked it shouldn’t take long for Capcom to compile something official to unveil. We know from the trailer that the game is heading to PS3 and Xbox 360, but we don’t know when. Only a 2013 timeframe is given, so at least Lost Planet 3 will avoid going up against GTA V this October.
