Ikea’s television stands have always been pretty good at hiding cable clutter. Their clever, built-in raceways provide a hideaway where all your wiring sins can go undetected by others who drop in to watch the big game. But Ikea wasn’t content trying to cover up the problem. They want it eliminated.
And so they’ve revealed the Uppleva TV line, which combines Ikea’s famously modern entertainment unit designs with essential home theatre gear. Built in to the stand is a Blu-ray player, speakers, and a high-definition smart TV. For added thump, Ikea provides a wireless subwoofer which you can tuck away wherever you’ve got room for it. There’s also a thin strip of LED lighting (you choose the color) integrated into the Uppleva’s bezel, which lets you accent your new set-up. Apart from mood lighting, you’ll also get four HDMI ports, two USB ports, and an easy-to-use remote.
It’s not quite a perfect solution, obviously. We’ll always want to throw a satellite or cable receiver, a gaming console or two, and a set-top box into the mix, but at least Ikea has designed Uppleva with front panels that allow remote control signals to pass through so that they can remain completely hidden most of the time.
Uppleva will be offered in a variety of sizes, and they’ll be launching later this year in European markets. Availability in North America is expected as well, though not until 2013. Pricing has been announced at around $950, though it wasn’t mentioned what size screen that gets you.
